Pancake Race
Tuesday, March 4, 2014
Pancake races have been occurring for hundreds of years on the day before Ash Wednesday and originated as a way to use up rich foods before 40 days of fasting during lent. The story goes that a housewife in England was so busy making pancakes that she was shocked when she heard church bells ringing and rushed out the door, frying pan in hand, to make it to the service.
Teams are encouraged to dress in winter pancake racing attire; costumes are suggested. Group and individual team photos will be taken during the event. Prizes will be awarded for a number of categories, including top teams and best costume. Winners earn bragging rights, a warm feeling in their hearts (knowing they’ve helped Big Brothers Big Sisters) and their names on a trophy, to be displayed at Maine Craft Distilling. Following the Pancake Race, competitors will bask in the competition’s glow and swap Pancake Race tales while dining at local restaurants participating in MRW.
